Recruiting Tips April 2011

Welcome to our newest edition of the Recruiting Tips as we swing into high gear for recruiting preparation.  Hopefully, you followed the winter tips and have positioned yourself to be ready for the spring and summer critical seasons.  (If you would like a copy of the winter season just drop an email).

College recruitment has one critical activity: setting a clear goal and disciplining yourself to do what it takes to accomplish it.  Planning and commitment - if you plan well and are strongly committed you can succeed.  Ignore either and your chances of success are low indeed.

This is a busy time for you coming up to the end of the school year. Playing on your school team and keeping your grades up are by themselves enough to fill your days, but if your goal is being recruited by the college of your choice you have to find another gear to add on some other crucial activities.

Setting Your Goal
If you don't know where you're going any road is fine.  Either you run your life or life runs you - Sounds simple but running your life is not easy. It requires thought, effort and planning.  Tip 1 is always own your life - set your goal, know where you want to go.

Write down your goal - Use our online planning sheet if you like. Click here to send me your goal statement.  Let's aim for a statement that is clear and tangible.  "I want to play college lacrosse," might be a bit vague - would any college do?  "My goal is to receive a college lacrosse scholarship to a D1 school in the northeast."  - Better, but do they all have the majors you might want?  How much of a scholarship do you need and do all the colleges cost the same?  Does this include an urban college, a rural college, a tiny religious college?

As you can see quickly setting your goal isn't as easy as it seems.  It requires thinking about what is important to you and gathering information.  Give it a try.  No matter what this is your first step and in many ways the most important.

What Does It Take?
"My goal is to graduate from one of my five choices of college that have my major and offer me at least a tuition scholarship in four years."

Not bad as a goal statement - So now what does it take?  First you have to be admitted.  Find out what it takes.  Maybe your coach can help with admissions and maybe not, but play safe and find the SAT, ACT, Rank in Class, Grade Point Average, extracurricular activities etc that are the requirements for admission to each of your choices.

Are you close?  Is there time to get your profile in line?  Are you willing to do what it may take to get your academics up to required levels? If so, plan what it is you have to do - be concrete - make lists - set goals - check them off as you accomplish them.

Get Healthy - Stay Healthy!
You've got great moves, excellent shots, move well, good stick and super passing.  Great.. but so do many of tens of thousands of your competitors. Achieving your goal takes discipline -sufficient sleep, eating right, regular work outs.  Set your personal health program and keep a tracking sheet of your progress.  No one said this was going to be easy. If it were easy everyone would do it.  How badly do you want to meet your goal?  When you're tempted to skip a day, stay out late, or dog it in practice ask yourself if you're ready to give up on your goal.

Getting Good - No - Get Excellent!
Whatever we say about getting recruited it starts with being a quality lacrosse player.  According to USA Lacrosse there are 147,000 high school lacrosse players and only 24,000 college players or about 6 high school

players for each college slot. However hard you're working on building your skills, one or more of them may be working harder!
What is vital is training more in the off season, doing more skill building, becoming more serious, being more intense, and challenging yourself to do your very best in practice,in games, at camps, and in tournaments.  Intense high quality play is a habit and not something to switch on and off. Find the best coach, the best club team, the highest competition.

Getting Seen - Being Outstanding Isn't Enough
Are you one of the top 25 players in Inside Lacrosse?  No?  If not, you'll need to bring your skills and accomplishments to the attention of the coaches of the colleges of your choice.  Make a communication plan.  Put together an outstanding video now! Plan ahead and order a Blue Chip package

Let's Review

Getting recruited is the last step in a process that started the first time you picked up a lacrosse stick.  What we'll be looking at this season is the last few steps in that process.  Each one is key to your success.  Over the next few issues we'll be taking each part of the process:

1. Goal Setting

2. Personal Health and Conditioning

3. Skill Building

4. Marketing Yourself

Meanwhile, if you have recruiting questions send them to checkted22@gmail.com  Not all can be answered personally, but ones of general interest will be answered here.  Remember- your goal statement is the vital starting point - If you'd like to have us review it click here.  In any event, be sure that you have yours done, written and posted where you can see it every day.
