Downing, 24, appeared in the first two games for the Outlaws this season and turned in a career-best four-goal performance, including one game-winning goal, on May 22 against the Cannons at Harvard Stadium. In addition, Downing collected one groundball in his first game with Denver, against Chicago on May 16. The 6-1, 195-pound native of Auburn, New York, played in all 12 games for the Los Angeles Riptide in 2008, where he collected 19 goals, including two power play goals and one game-winning goal, four assists and 21 groundballs.
In the post-season, Downing appeared in both the semifinals and the championship game for the Western Conference Champion Riptide that season, where he put together a then career-best breakthrough performance of three goals.
A 2007 graduate of Fairfield University, Downing was the program’s only multi-time All-America selection, earning Honorable Mention accolades each of his four years. Having scored 20 or more goals in each of his four seasons, the NEILA First Team All-New England and First Team All-ECAC (2007 and 2006) midfielder finished his career with 101 goals, good for fourth all-time in Fairfield history. He also ranks among the top-10 in the program’s history with 141 career points and 40 career assists.
