My name is Alex Helms, and I’m a current senior from Weddington, outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. My recruiting process was very unique, and I’d like to thank you for your help.
Because I have a smaller build, I was overlooked by most division I recruiters during my freshman, sophomore and even junior years. Even though I was going to big tournaments and showcases and playing well, I never had any true interest from division I schools. School had always been a priority for me, so I continued to work hard both on the field and in the classroom. On a last second decision going into my junior summer, I decided to attend the Blue Chip 225 in Amherst. This seemed like the perfect showcase because of the mix of coaching and exposure to high-academic division 3 schools. Going in, I knew I had to make the all star team in order to stand out.
I played well throughout the showcase and made the all star game. Finally, after years of little interest, I was contacted by a multitude of schools. Some of my final choices were Colgate, Gettysburg, Swarthmore and Washington & Lee. All of this would have been impossible without the Blue Chip 225.
However, playing at the University of North Carolina had always been a dream for me. Both of my parents went to school there, and from a young age I knew that’s where I wanted to be. For the past 2 years, I had been in contact with Coach Breschi about the potential of walking on. I updated him a couple times a year, and, after receiving my film from the Blue Chip 225, he offered me a preferred walk on spot upon my admission to UNC. In January, I was admitted to UNC, and I officially committed soon after.
The Blue Chip 225 was the best showcase experience that I had during high school. I’m sincerely thankful for your program and the opportunities it provided me.
Also, I’m still receiving emails, and I have gotten several about the Southeast Showcase. I live 15 minutes from Matthews Sportsplex and would be available to help if you need positions filled to help out that day. Thank you again for everything, and please let me know if you need my help.
